The Lesotho National Climate Outlook Forum (NCOF) took place on Monday at Cyaara Guest House in Maseru, bringing together representatives from key sectors, disaster management institutions, development partners, and media houses. The Forum reviewed the 2025/2026 rainfall season and discussed the climate outlook for 2026/2027.
Organised by the Lesotho Meteorological Services (LMS), the event featured presentations from the Disaster Management Authority (DMA), the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Agriculture, and the Water Sector. Stakeholders collectively interpreted the seasonal climate outlook and assessed its potential implications for communities and critical sectors.
After the technical presentations, participants collaborated to develop sector-specific early warning messages. These actionable messages translated climate risks into practical guidance that supported preparedness, planning, and early action across the country.
The NCOF strengthened multi-sectoral coordination, climate information uptake, and anticipatory action. By enhancing risk communication and ensuring that seasonal outlooks were transformed into accessible early warning information, the Forum improved decision-making for communities, policymakers, and the general public.
Innovation Highlight: MetApp
As part of its modernisation efforts, the Lesotho Meteorological Services presented progress on MetApp, a national weather application designed to deliver timely and reliable weather information to the public.
MetApp will provide hourly forecasts for locations across Lesotho and near-real-time observations from over 50 Automatic Weather Stations. Users will access data on temperature, rainfall, wind, and humidity, empowering communities with authoritative information to improve planning, decision-making, and preparedness for weather-related hazards.
Honourable Minister of Environment and Forestry Thabo Mofosi praised the initiative, saying the development of MetApp marks a milestone in the journey to make climate and weather information more accessible to every Mosotho. “For too long, communities have struggled to receive timely updates. This innovation will bring reliable forecasts directly into people’s hands, strengthening resilience and preparedness”, Mofosi said
He added, “MetApp is not just a technological achievement; it is a commitment to safeguarding lives, livelihoods, and our environment. By modernising how we communicate weather risks, we ensure that no one is left behind in the face of climate challenges.” MetApp represents a significant step toward strengthening public awareness and resilience in the face of climate variability.
